DISTRIBUTION AND MARKETING 

 Distribution and marketing: - Marketing is an absolutely vital aspect of ensuring that media products reach their intended audiences. In order to ensure this happens, producers are increasingly relying on digital technologies in order to efficiently promote media products on both a local and a global level.

Marketing = audience = profit 

 What kind of audience is this advert targeting?

  • The lexis ‘creepiest’, ‘how robots rule the world’ is simplistic, perhaps implies this advert is targeted at someone who is not AS educated in comparison to other people 
  •  Could be targeted towards an older audience, as those are the people who stereotypically read newspapers, whereas teenagers see adverts on their 

 How did distribution and circulation and marketing shape humans?

  • DEVELOPMENT: The series was announced in April 2014, as part of a partnership between channel 4 and xbox entertainment studios 
  • The series budget was twelve million.
  • It premiered on 14th June 2014 
  • It has been successful as it has 4 seasons and is on Netflix 
 OFCOM “The office of Communications” provide a largely hands off regulation of broadcasters in the UK. Actually, finding had and fast rules among their guidelines can be tricky. Many guidelines are heavily open to interpretation. 

Guidelines: 
  •  Addressing the needs of a variety of different audiences
  •  Insistence on inclusion, include an adequate representation of a range of protected lifestyles and characteristics - such as disabled individuals, LGBT representation and a “commitment to the Welsh Language” 
  • Impartiality rules, for example not ‘plugging’ large organisations 
  • Avoid discrimination against protected characteristics 
  • Minimise harm to vulnerable audience.
  • Broadcasts must not damage equipment or trigger epileptic seizures. “Ofcom is required to access the likelihood of material encouraging or inciting the commission of crime or of leading to disorder.”

  • not revealing the young girl's face creates mystery regarding Léna's whereabouts 
  • high angle shot over the mother, Claire, positions her as a vulnerable character, as if she is being watched 
EDITING 
  • Editing between the girls in their rooms shows they are next door.
SOUNDTRACK 
  • Television show; sounds of screaming linnks into the horror genre 
  • Sound of dogs as they go down the underground tunnel

PERFORMANCE 
  • Realistic acting
  • "leave me alone" screaming at the door

SETTING 
  • Opening reveals isolated mountains, the idea of being alone is scary

  • Rural town after she walks the guy home

  • Women presented as vulnerable as they walk alone, this makes the audience fear them
 CODING 
  • Symbolic coding of the colour green links to zombies and grossness

 GENERIC CONVENTIONS 
  • Lexis of the dialogue, "has the code changed", regarding the door 
  • blinking lights - horror 
  • The girl not remembering anything
  •  Lone child acting creepily
  •  Sounds in the dark.
