MOCK REVISION

 How to write an introduction

D - Definition

If the question asks about binary oppositions, define what that means. 'Binary opposition is the contrast of two concepts or things...'

A - Argument

Apply the definition you have just written to the media, 'this can be exampled in humans through the narrative of humans versus synths'

C - Context

Add in some context, 'The show first aired in 2014 where there was a lot of interest surrounding SciFi', or whatever you want to say.

MUSIC VIDEOS - RIPTIDE

Some terms to use when describing music videos!

  • Hyper-sexualisation: means 'beyond sexualisation'
  • Bricolage: constructing the product through many media forms
  • Generic Fluidity: the way genre/form has evolved over time
  • Star appeal: how someone is specifically constructed to be the star of the video

EDITING and CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • The editing of riptide is non-conventional, as the clips cut on the lexis of the lyrics, opposed to the beat of the music. This can be exampled through the lexis of the word 'green', altering the clip to a video of a green dollar bill. This non-conventional editing style could have been employed to correlate with the overall subversive narrative of the music video.
  • The high-angle shot of the woman in the swimming costume makes reference to the expectations employed by a patriarchal, hegemonic society as the audience can enjoy a voyeristic gaze. The high-angle shot from behind ensures not too much is revealed, meaning the woman is not hyper sexualised, yet still objectified, as her presence does not contribute to the overall narrative.
  • The close-up shot of the woman's face creates an uncomfortable mode of address to the audience, as they are forced to look at a woman who is not attractive from a hegemonic perspective, due to the mise-en-scene of her smudged makeup.
MISE-EN-SCENE, COLOUR and CODING
  • The mise-en-scene of the rope and chains makes reference to elements of the horror genre, this is an example of generic fluidity, as the music video form has evolved over time to include multiple genres, opposed to the upbeat, stereotypical 'dance routine', 'lip-sync' style. The inclusion of the horror genre is further anchored via the mise-en-scene of blood.
  • The body-expressions of the woman flimsily throwing the rope off of her, suggests that women are weak. This creates intertextual reference to the conventions of the horror genre, where women are repetitively represented as being the victim.
  • The mise-en-scene of the white nails turning to red acts as symbolic coding for purity turning to lust, due to stereotypical associations with the colours.
  • The blood on the woman's neck acts as pro-airetic coding for the end of something, such as death
  • The colour-pallet of the music video is overall dull and pale, perhaps making reference to the real-world through this realistic representation of colour.
NARRATIVE and LYRICISM
  • The overall narrative of this music video is that the man kills the woman to preserve her for himself. This is anchored through the lyricism of 'left hand man' which contrasts the 'right-hand-man', which means 'protector', suggesting how this man has other motives.
