POSTMODERNISM and HYPERREALITY

  •  Humans as an allegory, using sexualised representations of women to explore sexism in modern society
  • Challenging range of female representation
  • Binary opposition formed between the mother and Anita and Niska, and the roles that serve in this scene (domestic, sexual - Madonna vs Whore theory)
  • Emotional and sexual labour (close up of Niska's face, dialogue 'panties down not off')
  • Leo as an active stereotypically male protagonist, confirming Van-Zoonen's notion of gender being constructed through media language (clearly active within this scene)
  • Anita constructed through mise-en-scene, being bought from a shop, and an exciting present for the daughter, and a sexual object for the son (shot of her ironing, and also shot of Joe with the '18' leaflet - female body is acting to serve a male one)
  • Bell Hooks: Anita's status as a female is emphasised by her status as East Asian, reinforcing themes of sexual exploitation and post colonialism
  • Critical of sexual labour and prostitution (the shot reverse shot from Niska to the mans face connotes aggression and violence)
  • Anita as a streotypical housewife, constructed through setting and mise-en-scene (ironing board, the uniform etc)
  • Hyperreality: representations of representations. Anita is a simulation and idealised representation of a male fantasy.
  • Anita through her construction in this scene functions as a sex object, mother, cleaner, nanny and sexual rival.
  • Binary oppositions are used to create meaning and establish clear allegorical themes relating to the representation of gender.

POSTMODERNISM and HYPERREALITY

HYPER REALITY- BEYOND REALITY.
A representation of nothing. A representation of something that does not exist. Through the use of hyperreal imagery, audiences now confuse the signs of real for the real. And in many cases, the hupperal is far more attractive than reality itself!
"It is no longer a question of imitation nor duplication, nor even parody. It is a question of substituting the signs of the real for real." - Jean Baudrillard

Simulacra - a copy of a copy, a representation of representation. Something that refers to something else and not something real. Jean Baudrillard argued that this copy of a copy is real and in it's own right

Simulation - An imitation of something real

POSTMODERNISM

In postmodern culture the boundaries between the 'real' world and the world of media have collapsed and it is no longer possible to distinguish between what is reality and what is simulation. In fact, it doesn't really matter which is which.

POSTMODERNISM EXAMPLES:
  • Rejection of high culture - Yeezy
  • Intertextuality - postmodernism texts routinely make reference to other texts
  • Style of a substance
  • Breaking rules - breaking the fourth wall, breaking fundamental rules of making media
