MAGAZINE COVER
- The model, Zendaya, is placed conventionally in the centre of the page, allowing for an emphasis on her appearance. This highlights the ideological perspective of the producer, to be that women are primarily valued for their looks, as this should be mostly focused on by the audience. This is a conventional aspect of magazine covers, as most others focus strongly on apperance.
- The mise-en-scene of her makeup is smokey, which has connotations of being sexy and attractive, therefore linking in to the conventional narrative that women are primarily valued for their looks and beauty.
- The colour pallet includes the colours white and gold, which have symbolic connotations of being angelic. This, combined with the feather detailing on her costume, helps to create the narrative that Zendaya is an angel and should be respected. This is anchored by the lexis of 'actor, activist, it girl', which outlines Zendaya to be an admirable role model. The colours used are not stereotypically feminine, this could be used to subvert the audience's initial beliefs of what an angel should be, communicating to the audience that Zendaya is a modernised role model.
- The large 'fly high', further relates to the overall narrative that Zendaya is an angel. The large sizing of this font is successful in intriguing the audience to read the magazine further, as it is a non-conventional phrase expected to be on a fashion magazine, as it does have connotations of travel.
- The smaller writing underneath, 'feathers, florals, faux fur -- and fun!', demonstrates alliteration and insinuates the magazine will be exciting to read, due to the playful tone of the lexis. This is further anchored by the inclusion of the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence.
- The lexis 'secret to sexy summer legs', implies that this magazine is targeted towards a female audience, as women are stereotypically perceived to desire this look.
- The pull quote "you have the power", makes a direct mode of address to the audience. The 'you' makes the audience feel empowered, which is supported by Zendaya's direct stare at the camera, creating the narrative that Zendaya is empowering them.
- Zendaya is a well-known celebrity, and the camera angle makes Zendaya look slightly taller than the reader, as if she is looking down on them, due to her head being nearer the top of the page. This implies that Zendaya is above the audience, and they should feel inspired that someone in a position of authority is empowering them.
GLAMOUR
- The stereotypically feminine colour pallet of pinks and whites, implies that this magazine has a target audience of women. The use of the hot pink shades is fun and bold, insinuating this is a magazine is intended to target young women.
- The mise-en-scene of costume is subversive, as the professional white shirt is binary opposed with the black underwear on-show underneath. This further emphasises the bold and rebellious narrative.
- The listing of 'Bags! Shoes! Dresses!' includes exclamation marks, making the topics seem exciting.
- Kim's makeup is heavy, corresponding with modern trends of contour and strong eyebrows.
- Kim is wearing expensive jewellery, as gold has stereotypical connotations of wealth and money.
