Why did 'Vaati Vidya' make such a technically accomplished and extremely well researched video?
  • They know details about all of the characters and how their stories are linked together.
  • They know multiple facts about all of the characters discussed.
  • The video is structured into three separate sections.

How does this video address its audience? Think language, vocal delivery, editing...
  • This video addresses the audience as a group of people who have no knowledge/understanding of this game, as the story is simplistically explained to the audience.
  • The tone of voice is consistently smooth, and the narrator speaks slowly, making sure this is easily comprehendible for an audience.
  • The language is simplistic and relevant to the story.

Who is the target audience for this video?
  • People who are confused/interested in the game.
  • Possibly a younger audience who are getting into gaming.

Take a look at the number of views and answer again: who is the target audience for this video?
  • When reading a lot of the comments, they all seem to know quite a lot about the game.
  • Perhaps this is for fans.

Henry Jenkins Fan Theory
  • Group of people who are dedicated to specific media product = fandom
  • Fans help to construct a media product
  • Textual poaching; taking something without permission. This is where the audience take what they want from a media product. This might not always be what the producer intends to be taken from a media product. Such as fan fiction.
  • Fans can use youtube to make fan videos. A popular version of this involves Dark Souls. Some fans like to make videos where they analyse how characters connect, make their own narratives (with logical explanation) etc.
But in order to be a fan, they need to go further. Put extremely simply, a fan is somebody who actively does something with a media product. Fandom can manifest itself in lots of ways , but it can be evidenced in the following, non-exhaustive ways:

  • Attending a convention
  • Dressing up as a character from the franchise (cosplay)
  • Getting a themed tattoo (not a good idea lol)
  • joining and contributing to an online forum on the topic
  • Buying themed merchandise, for example action figures
  • Writing fan fiction
  • Going on holiday specifically to visit where a film was filmed
  • Wearing a band T-shirt
  • Following a band on tour
  • Etc etc etc

Fandom is fascinating, as it demonstrates ways in which audiences can truly actively engage with a media product.

Lets Plays:
  • LifeSimmer - SIMS 4 lets play. I used to watch this in year 7 I think, it was about a Sim and their life. It had a storyline following a female Sim by the name of Candice? And the youtuber just played it until she died.
  • DomTheBomb - Walking Dead. He also made like fan-theories and things like that, was actually quite entertaining to watch.
  • Last Of Us - a lot of my friends are into this and they watch people play it on youtube.
Fan Edits
Some fans make their own wall-papers to television shows.

This is an example of a fan-made edit, where they have added font and their own art/graphics to Ariana Grande, in order to create their own concept. It seems as if they are going for a futuristic or cosmic concept with this design.

This is a simple style of fan edit commonly found on instagram.
The creators are often young people, who make edits based on colours.
This edit of Billie Eilish follows a blue theme, as influenced by her hair

Cosplay:

Forums: A lot of fandoms have their own "wiki", such as Walking Dead Wiki, where you can find information about the characters, seasons, etc. Some of these contain forums for people to chat and discuss ideas. Some are moderated, but others are not.

Fanfiction: There are three main websites I found for this;
  • Fanfiction.net
  • Archive Of Our Own
  • Wattpad (but it also has normal books on it too)
Extension task
Spider Man:
  • Clearly for quite "invested" fans, who know a lot about the characters
  • Discusses the dynamic between different characters and the brightness brought by Peter Parker's personality, which is different and compelling.
