Videogames 4 - Ubisoft, media diversity, and economic factors in the videogame industry

Ubisoft - key facts.

  • The forth largest publicly traded game company in America and Europe
  • Established in France 1986
  • Vertically and horizontally integrated media conglomerate with multiple studios and subsidiaries
  • Focus on AAA games with high production values
  • Publishes and develops games from multiple genres, targeting different audiences to maximise profit. This also minimises risk.
  • Some games include Rayman, very high production values. (I've played this on my 3DS lol)
  • They also own the Just Dance franchise!
Curran and Seaton - Media concentration limits variety, creativity and quality.

But how diverse is Ubisoft's output?
  • Not very
  • Yes, they do release games which target multiple genres, but they all have high production values, targeting a mainstream audience, big budget development. They offer a standardised product. Five Assassin's creed games were released in 2015. This is not diverse.
  • As any company, their aim is to make money. Yet here it is very clear. Their concentration on profit and goals to minimise risk, limits variety, creativity and ... possibly quality?
Issues with aggressive conglomeration:
  • Limits creativity - if you are solely making a game to make lots and lots of money, there are only a few things you can do with it. They are aiming for a mass audience. Most audiences want to play a violent game.
  • This limits competition. No-one can compete with Ubisoft, apart from (lets say) Electronic Arts, responsible for the sims.
  • This also limits diversity.
