SPECIALISED INDUSTRY

How are video games a specialised industry?

  • Interactivity. You can interact a lot with video games nowadays, and manipulate the story and what happens!
  • Huge expenditure of resources
  • Much higher RRP: It is up to shops what price they actually sell them at. Video games are actually a lot cheaper than they used to be, as despite inflation, they have still retained their average £50 selling price when first released.
  • Significantly longer length: they are a lot longer in comparison to things such as television shows. It allows audiences to put lots and lots of time into the game, increasing interactivity
  • A dedicated, core, target audience. Many posters include photos of the target audience, such as the Donkey Kong poster from the 90's. There are many negative stereotypes. There is the assumption that only a certain few do play video games.
  • Games developed for specific hardware or multiple platforms. An example of specific hardware could be a Nintendo switch, XBOX One and PS4.
These are all highly debatable

From the blog: "The Electronics Entertainment Expo is perhaps the most famous and arguably the most important mainstream videogame exposition in the world. This highly coordinated event allows publishers to show off new games to crowds of journalists and other industry professionals. These trade shows are extensively covered on videogame websites, and streamed live on to YouTube and other streaming services."
