Representation - To show something again. The same as any meaning is created through visual codes, technical codes, audio codes and narrative codes! (media language).
The study of representation looks at
- The group, place or issue on which a media text is focusing
- The technical devices the media test uses in order to present these groups or issues
- The message about the group or issue being created within the text
- The impact of this message on the target audience
PEA paragraph structure.
Point - this group is represented in this way...
Evidence - 'quote' media language, eg; mise-en-scene, shot types.
Analysis - This shows/creates meaning.
In The Sun newspaper, the topless women are represented to be there for the male-gaze, and reinforces the idea that women are only there to be looked at. This would have a different reaction if it was men. This further strengthens the idea that we live in a patriotic hegemonic society.
The Mail Online - the online version of the Daily Mail. The Mail Online is the most accessed newspaper online in the world. It is an international newspaper, which is what makes it special. The target audience is women between 30-50.
One advantage of digital newspapers, is that it reaches a new, younger target audience who are more invested online, opposed to real-paper news.
