  • The setting is an inner-City area, this is probably relatable to the audience.
  • The soundtrack is appealing to a black audience, it's funk, soul, R&B
  • The characters talk informally, their mode of speech is black slang. This is very specific.
This is a genre marketed specifically towards black, inner-city audiences. It is appealing because it includes themes which a black audience can relate and associate to.

These films were predominantly made by white people, and targeted a black audience, who weren't going to see 'white films'.

The purpose of art - to create meaning. It is designed to influence emotions and change the world. 

The film industry is motivated by profit and power
