Audience

Diesel - go with the flaw campaign (2017)

  • Close up shots of sexualised body parts makes the advert more appealing to the audience
  • Ideology - Flaws should not limit us in life, but by accepting them we can start a revolution in society.
Primary Audience  - The group of people that the media product is made for.

Secondary Audience - The second audience that the product is aimed at

There are three elements:
  1. Text
  2. Audience
  3. Producer
T.A.P

The producer encodes a product, and then the audience decodes a product.

Audiences need to engage with a media product in order to make money. In order to make money, the producer needs to make it good, talking to audiences and researching what has been successful before.

Audience...
  1. Targeting - aiming specifically at a certain group of people or an audience.
  2. Attracting - making the product appealing to the target audience by changing/adding features. Make the audience want to get the product.
  3. Reaching - developing the advert by interacting with different people and addressing their needs, perhaps even the secondary/tertiary audience. Extending yourself to an audience. A great way of doing this is advertising.
  4. Addressing - Making a direct reference to a specific segment of the audience. This is where you consider how you will speak to your audience, modes of address. Ie, if a show is aimed towards teenage girls then the characters should speak and act with mannerisms relatable to them.
  5. Constructing - putting together different elements to make an advert constructed by the audience's needs/wants. You can construct an audience by building it up, and telling people that the media product on offer is what they want
Modes of address - the way in which a piece of media speaks to the audience

The Last Of Us - Game.
  • Although the age certificate is 17+, the target audience is likely aimed to be younger teens who play games. We can gather from the setting that the game is post-apocalyptic, and therefore will include action, which is appealing for a younger audience.
  • Because there is a young teenage girl as the main emphasis, at the front of the shot, it can be inferred this is aimed towards a younger audience due to a relatable character typically being favoured by players.
  • The target audience, even more specifically, is a group who enjoy action/shooting games as expressed by the props held by the two characters.
  • It is also for playstation players, as specifically pointed out by the lexis of the word 'only'
  • The girl, Ellie, is looking directly at the audience creating a direct connection between them, perhaps hinting towards the target audience being her age group and quite possibly female.
  • There is a female gamer market so perhaps this game is trying to cater for that, particularly by adding a familial tone in the cover, as stereotypically women are deemed to be more caring for family by society.
  • There is a sense of danger added too, so this game is catered towards people who find the horror genre/action genre appealing. The title 'the last of us', suggests a sense of vulnerability as there is a strong focus on the two lone people in the scene.
  • There is a dark colour scheme with regards to clothing and the buildings behind, so the target audience may have a preference towards games with deeper/grittier themes such as death, which can be expected with the title.
  • It has the same conventions as a movie poster, so the target audience are those who enjoy playing story-style games with a mix of action. I'm not sure when this was released but it may have been trying to appeal to the audience who enjoyed zombie style games (such as The Walking Dead Game) released in the early 2010's.
  • The target audience should also be appreciative of graphics as the game looks aesthetically pleasing with regards to character design. Also, if you play the game, there is a strong emphasis on graphics.
