One of the reasons that there's binary opposition is because it creates comedy and it's entertaining to watch. Two different things together create a dynamic. Binary oppositions help to emphasise things, such as having a dumb character emphasises the audience's intelligence.  The producers choose characters who are very different because it gives the writer's an advantage, as it can appeal to multiple audiences. Reliability. It's also much easier and much more structured to write a show with binary oppositions.

Binary oppositions are an element of narrative, as they can quickly tell a story, and establish character archetypes. Character archetypes are characters that are constantly occurring.
